Dr. Sloan is passionate about advancing the field of joint replacement surgery. He obtained his master’s degree in Public Health at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, focused on Epidemiology and Biostatistics. He went on to complete medical school training at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He completed his Internship and Residency training in orthopedic surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, America’s oldest orthopedic surgery department. During his time in Philadelphia, he published over 40 peer-reviewed articles in the top orthopedic journals (Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, The Bone & Joint Journal, The Journal of Arthroplasty). His research focuses primarily on methods to improve outcomes following hip and knee replacement surgery, health policy, and technology.
He has had the honor to be selected to speak nationally about his research at the largest national meetings of orthopedic surgeons, including at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, the Hip Society, the Knee Society, the Orthopaedic Research Society, the Eastern Orthopaedic Association, and the American Public Health Association. These research projects have garnered several awards, including the Marvin Steinberg Award for Excellence in Arthroplasty, the DeForest Willard Award for Service, the University of Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Surgery Resident Research Award, the AAOS Annual Meeting Top 10 Poster, as well as induction into Alpha Omega Alpha (Medical Honor Society).
Dr. Sloan has been interviewed about his publications by The New York Times, CNN, Reuters, Popular Science, and the Arthritis Foundation National Blog.
Dr. Sloan rose to national prominence after the publication of his paper, “Projected Volume of Primary Joint Arthroplasty in the U.S., 2014 to 2030.” This has been one of the most highly cited publications in orthopedic surgery over the past decade, with nearly 600 citations since 2018. A selection of his peer-reviewed publications is listed below.
